Singapore Presidential Candidates Make First National Televised Message


On Thursday (Aug 24), the first of two presidential candidate broadcasts aired, featuring the three contenders for the Sep 1 Presidential Election sharing their campaign messages.


Mr. Ng Kok Song, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Mr. Tan Kin Lian, who were confirmed as candidates this week during Nomination Day, each presented their messages in that order. The second broadcast on Aug 30 will have the sequence reversed.


During the first broadcast, Mr. Ng highlighted the need for a non-partisan President. He also emphasized the President's role in safeguarding against potential mismanagement of reserves and appointments.


Mr. Tharman expressed his intent to bring an independent perspective to the role if elected. He also promised to be a unifying figure domestically and an advocate for Singapore's interests abroad.


Mr. Tan Kin Lian stressed the importance of diverse leadership and articulated his vision of a united and harmonious Singapore.
