Singaporeans should show support to Joseph Schooling and Amanda Lim: Shanmugam

Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam stated on Wednesday that swimmers Joseph Schooling and Amanda Lim had brought glory to Singapore, and Singaporeans would never forget their accomplishments (31 August).

Shanmugam stated in a Facebook post, "I am confident Singaporeans would be gracious...and give them our support and backing" without elaborating on the context of his remarks.

On Tuesday, the authorities revealed that Schooling and Lim were under investigation by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for alleged cannabis-related offenses during the May SEA Games.

Given that Schooling is presently performing National Service, the Ministry of Defence and the Singapore Armed Forces will review the situation and take the required action.

CNB has issued Lim a stern warning in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Shanmugam stated, "Both Schooling and Amanda have been handled similarly to how others have been treated."

The minister stated that the swimmers had worked hard and contributed greatly to the nation.

“Schooling in particular scaled heights which I never imagined: Olympic Gold and that too in swimming. I will never forget him competing against legends, as there were so many celebrities in the finals. And he defeated them all."

Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth, also posted on Facebook late Wednesday, encouraging Singaporeans to support the two swimmers while Sport Singapore determines the proper subsequent steps.

"They are aware that they have let down Singaporeans and, as role models, many in the athletic community... "Admitting their mistakes is the first step toward a successful recovery," he stated in his piece.

"I believe they deserve our compassion and understanding as they attempt to recover from this traumatic event. I've stated previously that we cannot be fair-weather fans. Let's rally around our swimmers and encourage them to make amends."

Jamus Lim, member of parliament for the Sengkang GRC, also addressed the subject, stating that everyone makes errors. The representative stated in a Wednesday Facebook post that he has benefited from people' forgiveness in the past.

Dr. Lim stated that living in a compassionate society demands less judgment and more empathy.

The sanctions that these athletes will face will hold them accountable for their actions. "However, I will not condemn the people; let the one without guilt cast the first stone," Jesus said.
