Singaporeans urged to postpone non-essential travel to Sri Lanka in light of protests. MFA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Singapore advised Singaporeans on Thursday (May 12) to postpone any non-essential travel to Sri Lanka after violence broke out there.


In a travel advisory, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) urged Singaporeans in Sri Lanka to maintain vigilant and take all essential precautions for their personal safety.


Sri Lanka's economic crisis prompted more than a month of largely peaceful demonstrations, but last week, public fury erupted into violence.


It resulted in at least nine deaths, including two police officers, countrywide. Over 200 individuals have been injured, and 136 homes have been destroyed.


The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised Singaporeans in Sri Lanka to avoid rallies and big public gatherings.


They should also attentively watch the news and follow local authorities' directions.


"Singaporeans traveling to or inside Sri Lanka are also strongly urged to acquire comprehensive travel insurance and familiarize themselves with the terms and coverage," MFA said.


Singaporeans in Sri Lanka who have not yet e-register with MFA are also urged to do so.
