SMRT has filed a police report in response to a viral video that appears to show someone blocking an MRT station platform screen door from shutting.
Yesterday, in response to questions from TODAY, the president of SMRT Trains stated that on February 28 at around 5:00 p.m., a commuter on the eastbound station platform at Jurong East MRT station "deliberately stopped a platform screen door from shutting."
Mr. Lam stated, "We take such behavior seriously; not only is it unsafe for the individual involved, but the reckless act might also create train delays, hurting numerous travelers."
"Commuters are encouraged not to impede the doors when they are closing for everyone's safety," he stated.
He stated that SMRT has reported the incident to law enforcement.
Wednesday's video was submitted to the social networking website Reddit from the perspective of someone who sounds like a little child.
The guy seems to prevent the platform screen door from shutting with a metallic item, delaying the departure of the train. The individual then asserts that the film will be published to YouTube, before withdrawing this assertion.
Backing away from the train door, a voice from behind the camera declares, "I'm going far away so I'm not too much of a suspicion."
After a minute-long delay, an SMRT employee goes to the impacted platform door and seems to resolve the problem. After this, only then does the train depart.
The majority of the Reddit users who upvoted and commented on the post were disapproving of the individual's behavior.
The Rapid Transit Systems Rules say that no one may tamper with the station screen doors or train doors, or the functioning of these doors, unless it is an emergency or he is a duly authorized individual. The maximum fine for interfering with the operation of these doors is S$1,000.
