Speaker of the Parliament, Tan Chuan-Jin, has issued a public and private apology to Sengkang GRC MP Jamus Lim for using unparliamentary language during a parliamentary session. Tan took to Facebook on July 11 to address a recently circulated video clip capturing the incident.
The video clip, which surfaced three months after the recorded Parliament sitting on April 17, 2023, captured an exchange where Tan allegedly muttered "f*cking populist" following his call for Sembawang GRC MP Vikram Nair to speak after Lim.
While Tan stated that he did not recall the specific occasion, he acknowledged that upon reviewing the clip, it became apparent that he had reacted to a speech delivered in the chamber. Expressing his regret, Tan apologized for voicing his thoughts aloud and using unparliamentary language, recognizing that it was inappropriate.
In addition to the public apology, Tan personally reached out to MP Jamus Lim to convey his remorse, and Lim graciously accepted the apology. Tan shared his full response on Facebook, explaining the circumstances and expressing his regrets for his actions.
Tan's apology demonstrates his commitment to upholding the decorum and professionalism expected within the parliamentary setting, fostering a respectful and conducive environment for constructive dialogue.
