SPF using Google Forms? Beware of this scam

A new variant of the phishing scam lures victims into filling out a Google form using the "Singapore Police Force" logo.

In an advisory sent on Wednesday, December 7th, the police stated that victims would first get an unsolicited email about claiming a gift voucher.

When visitors click the embedded URL, they are sent to a website which allows them to input their credit or debit card details, security code, and one-time password.

Then, a fraudulent transaction would be made using the card.

"Shortly after the transaction, the scammers would call the victim and pose as bank employees following up on the illegal transaction," police added.

The victims would then be led to a phony Google form carrying the Singapore Police Force (SPF) logo and a fake police case number. They would provide their personal information under the guise of filing a police report.

"After earning the victim's trust, the scammers, acting as bank employees, would perpetrate other frauds via him," police said, adding that victims may be instructed to download harmful software that gives the scammers access to their computer.

The scammers would next access the victim's online banking accounts in order to conduct unauthorized transactions.

The police cautioned the public not to click on URL links from unauthorized sources that appear suspicious.

“SPF will not ask members of the public to provide information on scams or lodge reports through Google forms,” they added.
