Tan Chuan-Jin, Singapore's Speaker of Parliament, self-verifies on Twitter with 'Blue Tick'

Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin from Singapore has taken matters into his own hands by giving himself a blue tick on Twitter, rather than paying the US$8 (S$11) fee for Twitter's verification service.

In a Facebook post, he explained that he had also given himself verification in other colors to be safe and used the hashtags #insurance and #hedging. He humorously referred to himself as #cheapo and suggested that he might not pay to have his blue tick reinstated.

The blue tick was originally meant to indicate that Twitter accounts were authentic and verified. However, as part of Elon Musk's Twitter Blue initiative, accounts that did not pay for the service had their blue ticks removed, including those of some high-profile individuals.

Some blue ticks have been randomly reinstated, including those of people who have been deceased for years. Celebrities and public figures have taken to the platform to deny paying the monthly US$8 fee, which has now become a symbol of support for Mr. Musk.
