The Online Citizen returns, Terry Xu moving to Taiwan

The Online Citizen has returned.

On Friday, September 16, its website and social media accounts were reactivated.

Terry Xu, editor of TOC, stated that he will "relocate" to Taiwan to manage its activities.

Xu updated the Facebook page and website of TOC after reactivating them.

He stated that he was moving to Taiwan in order to "establish a news media company that would give daily news coverage in Asia."

"Both the operation of the website and its social media platforms have been moved to a new Taiwanese firm, while the old Singapore entity is in the process of closing," he wrote.

The relaunched TOC will not, however, cover daily news, but will instead focus on offering commentary and analysis on current events in Asia.

He stated that further information will be provided "in due course."

Background

On September 14, 2021, TOC was ordered to cease publishing on its websites and social media accounts.

Despite "several reminders and extensions," the IMDA stated that TOC failed to reveal all of its financial sources.

It was given two weeks to comply with the Broadcasting Act by providing more information.

Two days later, prior to IMDA's deadline, the website and several of its social media accounts were disabled.

The authorities announced the cancellation of TOC's license on October 15 after the organization continuously refused to disclose its financial sources.

In December, the High Court denied TOC's request to overturn IMDA's orders to shut down its website and social media accounts.
