Transport Minister S Iswaran is currently assisting the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) in an ongoing investigation. The nature of the case has not been disclosed by the bureau, as stated in their announcement on Wednesday (July 12).
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong issued a separate statement, confirming that Mr Iswaran, along with other individuals, will be interviewed by the CPIB as part of the investigation. Last Wednesday, Mr Lee received a briefing from the director of the CPIB regarding a case that had been uncovered, and he granted approval for a formal investigation to commence.
The director of the CPIB, Mr Denis Tang, who reports to the Prime Minister's Office, will oversee the investigation. Prime Minister Lee stated that he provided his consent on July 6, and the formal investigation officially began on July 11.
To ensure a thorough investigation, Prime Minister Lee has instructed Mr Iswaran to take a leave of absence until the process is completed. During this period, Senior Minister of State Chee Hong Tat will assume the role of Acting Minister for Transport.
CNA has reached out to the People's Action Party (PAP) for clarification on Mr Iswaran's position as a Member of Parliament while the investigation is ongoing.
In their statement, the CPIB emphasized their commitment to conducting a comprehensive investigation, aimed at establishing the facts and upholding the rule of law. They acknowledged the public's interest in the case due to a minister being involved, but due to the ongoing investigation, further details cannot be provided at this time.
The CPIB also highlighted Singapore's strong stance against corruption, maintaining a zero-tolerance approach. They assured the public that all cases are investigated impartially and without hesitation, and appropriate actions will be taken against any individuals involved in corrupt activities.
