From Tuesday (March 29), group sizes will be limited to ten individuals, and masks will no longer be required in outdoor settings, as part of what Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong described as a crucial step toward living with Covid-19.
Up to 75% of employees who are eligible to work from home will be permitted to return to their jobs. Additionally, capacity restrictions for larger events and settings with a capacity of more than 1,000 people will be increased to 75%.
PM Lee declared in a national speech on Thursday (March 24) that with the risk of outside transmission greatly reduced, wearing masks outdoors would become optional – but will remain necessary indoors.
The maximum group size will be expanded from five to ten persons.
Singapore is now in a position to loosen limitations, PM Lee noted, having "hit a significant milestone" in its Covid-19 journey.
He cited strong vaccination rates in Singapore, where around 95% of the eligible population has finished the whole immunization regimen and 71% of the overall population has gotten a booster injection.
The surge of cases caused by the Omicron variety has peaked and is now declining, he continued, stressing that the population now has better protection as a result of many people having already been exposed to – and recovered from – the virus.
The number of Covid-19 cases has steadily decreased from more than 24,000 on March 1 to roughly 10,000 in recent days.
He said that in determining how far and how quickly to loosen limitations, the authorities took care not to overburden healthcare staff and the system.
PM Lee has noted that Singapore's success against the epidemic has been made possible only by the collaborative effort of the people, with companies and critical employees also contributing to the economy and social services.
He saved the highest appreciation, though, for healthcare personnel and their "extraordinary efforts at great personal cost."
