Arab Barometer is a nonpartisan research network run by a combination of universities (Princeton, Michigan, University of Jordan) and research centers. From 28 Sep to 8 Oct, they conducted a survey of Palestinian sentiments regarding Hamas, just days before the conflict broke out. The survey has 790 respondents from the West Bank and 399 respondents from Gaza. Here are some insights from the survey:
1. While there are hardcore Hamas extremists among the younger generation, trust for Hamas is generally low
2. About three in four Palestinians found the Hamas government unresponsive
3. Less than a third of Palestinians identify most strongly with Hamas as a political group.
If the Palestinian populace is not united behind Hamas, then perhaps they are more innocent than some believe. Non-combatants (on both sides) should be spared the brutality of war.
