Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim was with his family at a hotel lobby near Siam Paragon shopping mall, on 3 Oct when the shootings happened. When their transport arrived, Tunku Ismail told his driver to bring them to the Malaysian embassy, but he was told that the Singapore embassy was nearby. He contacted Singapore's Consul-General Jeevan Singh in Johor for help, and was safely admitted into Singapore's embassy in Bangkok, later joined by Malaysia's ambassador to Thailand Jojie Samuel.
He later posted to social media with a dramatic thank you to Singapore for assisting him in his time of need. Majulah Singapura! We are always happy to render assistance to our neighbours.
But the Malaysian embassy is next door...?
Curiously, the Malaysian embassy is not only a mere 500m away from the Singaporean embassy, but is also nearer from Siam Paragon. Which means the Tunku would pass by his own country's embassy before reaching Singapore's embassy.
His reasons remain unclear, but regardless, at least everyone is safe.
