A 34-year-old cleaner molested his coworker many times while intoxicated at work, ignoring the victim's complaints.
The man was sentenced to 26 days in jail yesterday (December 21) after pleading guilty to two counts of outrage of modesty and two more counts that were taken into consideration at sentencing.
Documents filed in court did not reveal the identities of the Malaysian cleaner, the victim, or the company where they all worked.
According to testimony presented in court, the man had consumed a glass of whiskey before the incident on November 14 at approximately 5.30 p.m.
The woman, a 26-year-old Singaporean waitress, was cleaning cutlery at the bar counter when the cleaner moved up behind her and stroked her right buttock.
She was taken aback when she turned around and saw him grinning and laughing at her.
Bryont Chin, the DPP's deputy, stated, "She did not confront him since she was unclear of what to do, and instead resumed work."
The man later reached out to touch the woman on the shoulder, but she flinched back and retreated to the other side of the bar.
A few minutes later, he followed her into a storage room and kept trying to get her to join him for a drink. After she drank some of the alcohol against her will, he flipped her left breast with his hand.
The victim became frustrated and shouted "oi" in protest.
The incident occurred at around 6:25 p.m., when the man moved up behind the victim as she sat at the bar counter and touched her back, causing her to flinch and move her elbow in an attempt to resist.
He ignored her warning and stroked her buttock.
Because she "was terrified to be involved in a fight with the accused," as DPP Chin described it, she originally did not file a police report or notify their employer.
The cleaner was confronted by her boyfriend two days after she told him about it, and a police report was filed.
According to DPP Chin, the cleaner's guilty plea should not be given too much weight because he was caught in the act on closed-circuit television footage, for which he should be sentenced to three to four weeks in jail.
The individual, who was unrepresented by a lawyer, apologized to the judge in Tamil through an interpreter, saying that he had done what he had done "playfully" and had not realized the serious consequences.
His wife was due to give birth any day now, he said, and he needed time to prepare for the arrival of their new child and tell his family.
Judge Ronald Gwee postponed the hearing by one week.
He faced up to three years in prison, a fine of up to $1,000, or caning for each count of illegal force used to outrage the woman's modesty.
